I was somewhat amused recently when a potential client who was looking to make a career change spent more time talking about his current "unrelated" experience and achievements rather than what he can bring to his new job target.
I guess like anything else in life, if you have been doing the same thing for a long time, it is hard to let go. However, I said it once and I will keep saying it - when you are changing careers, you have to market your potential not your past.
For example:
A federal employee looking to transition to a senior executive corporate role will need to highlight relevant skills, strengths, and achievements that market him as an "insider" and not "outsider". See how this DEA agent gets transformed on paper.
