Happy new year! I wish you a blessed, dynamic, turnaround and breakthrough 2012 - I have decided that this is the year for excellence and "blow-your-mind" blessings and I hope you join me with the same attitude.
As your coach, I completely understand how much of your (our) lives are impacted by jobs and personal career goals - so what will it take to be successful in 2012? What are companies looking for? What new skills or training if any do you need?
In a WSJ article, the experts suggest that creativity, adaptability and flexibility seem to be among the key qualifying traits that you need to have...Jobseekers, Be Creative and Flexible
"In addition to the standard prerequisites, employers will be looking for workers who are able to quickly adapt to new responsibilities as companies respond to changing economic and industry trends. So workers should highlight their creative skills to differentiate themselves, says Lawrence Katz, an economist at Harvard University."
In addition, technical literacy, business acumen and general proficiency seemed to be the overall conscensus. Well, no surprises here...with technology continuing to revolutionalize how we live and work, you would be left in the dark (literally) if you did not continuously improve your technical skills.
Increased competition from other countries means that US employers have to find unique ways to create advantage for their customers, so as an employee, while your specialized skills are important, you will need to understand the business as a whole and how you contribute to remain as a valuable employee.
Sounds to me like you will have to proactively seek out opportunities to grow, increase your competitive advantage as an employee, think outside the box to make the company successful (after all, it can protect your job, right?) and avoid being too tied to one role and one area of expertise that you can never grow as a person. Well, that's what I have been telling you all along...never take the status quo approach when it comes to your career.
What proactive steps are you going to take today for a better career experience in 2012?
